Just out of curiosity - Fratellowatches.com

Today, I noticed an Omega LED wrist watch on someone’s wrist in an interior store. Now, if I would be in a watch shop or perhaps in a bar or something,Watch copies, I probably asked him more about this watch. Is he a collector? Is this his only watch? How did het get it? What about the history of this watch? Is he aware that he wears something ‘special’? Does he have box, papers and the original receipt? You know the drill, leather handbags wholesale,Linde Werdelin SpidoSpeed Chronograph - A 3-D Skeletonised Experience, these questions need to be answered if you encounter someone with a nice watch.

Now, back at home, I still don’t know anything about this man and his watch. I think I will manage to sleep well, but it would have been nice to interact with someone who has a nice time piece. At least when he was aware of having one I felt it wasn’t the right place to ask, this man was clearly occupied with shopping for interior with his family. What would you do?

Louis Vuitton Globe Shopper Cabas MM

Louis Vuitton Globe Shopper Cabas MMWe have all delved into the heated discussion of logo bags. To buy or not to buy. We have all discussed and even argued over the who/what/where/when/why/how of logo bags. Are they worn to be seen or out of the wearer loving the style and the brand. Many times I’m a bit in between, because I know many of us have differing opinions, but for this bag I’m going to go along with Bag Crazy and venture to say that this bag will be carried knowing that every onlooker including the man on the Goodyear Blimp will see it. Ok,watch rolex replica, and exaggeration, but you get my gist. Before you think I completely am ragging on this bag, hublot watches, I want you to know that I actually kinda like it. The Louis Vuitton Globe Shopper Cabas MM is one of the simpler canvas bags LV has but still screams out ‘Look at me! I’m a Vuitton!’. Hey, I wouldn’t mind being a Vuitton myself but I just couldn’t sport this bag.

The Louis Vuitton Globe Shopper Cabas MM shows off the Louis Vuitton logo that dates back to 1905 on a linen patch on top of this cotton and linen canvas bag. The bag is accented with brass hardware which gives off a little antique feel. The logo that you can’t help but miss is actually of the Historic Louis Vuitton Trunks & Bags logo. With that being said, this bag is actually simple and kind of cute, but again, I just don’t like the wham-bam-logo. Trimmed with natural cowhide and sporting two engraved buckles at each side, this bag does have some pluses to it. The inside is lined in polyester-and-cotton Monogram Mini lining and has an interior pocket plus and interior snap=hok closure. Sizing up at 13″ x 11.8″ x 3.1″, I feel like this bag will be a toss up between likes and don’t likes. If you are a liker of the bag,u boat watch replica, find it through eLuxury for $1280.

LinkedIn Discussion Audemars Piguet or Hublot. Which one would you buy if this was the choice

Dec
13

Since a year or two, leather handbags wholesale, a friend and I are running the ‘a Passion for Watches‘ group on LinkedIn. Over 3,000 watch enthusiasts joined and a relative high number of them participate in discussions. One of the more recent discussions is really worth mentioning here, as it started three months ago and still receives comments on a daily basis. The initial post was quite a simple question, “Audemars Piguet or Hublot. Which one would you buy if this was the choice?”. The votes are unanimously for Audemars Piguet.

Although being a huge Audemars Piguet fan myself en would pick it any time over a Hublot, I will have to admit that I am a bit biased and never did much research in the current line-up of Big Bang watches and their in-house movements. However, I am pretty sure that Hublot has less watches with complications than Audemars Piguet has (including those non-Royal Oak models) in their catalog. I am also more attracted to the almost satin finish of the stainless steel Royal Oak cases and bracelets as opposed to the exotic materials used on most Hublots for casing and bracelet/straps.

In the discussion over at LinkedIn, a number of comments include the fact that Hublot is being recognized as a decent watch brand, watches norway, but certainly not on par with a brand like AP. As member Scott Montemurro puts it: “AP sits at the pinnacle of fine timepiece making along with Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe and Breguet. As with the others mentioned, Audemars Piguet has the heritage and legitimacy of one of the world’s finest horological creations. I truly admire the asthetics, craftsmanship and success of Hublot and would absolutely purchase one but not without choosing the AP first.”

You can debate whether AP is on the same level as Patek or Vacheron, but it seems to be the common thought on this brand from Le Brassus. At least it is a spot (or ranking) where Hublot has not been put (yet). Although Hublot’s Big Bang resembles the most popular range of Audemars Piguet, the Royal Oak Off-Shore models, they do not seem to be in the same league according to watch aficionados at LinkedIn. However, consumers might think otherwise, as Hublot’s Big Bang is a big success in terms of sales.

The impopularity of Hublot in the discussion might also have something to do with what Thorsten Heitzmann posted in my opinion, which is as follows: “When it comes to spending a lot of money, many people will rather go for something iconic than for the ‘special alternative’.” An interesting and perhaps logical point of view, but Jerome Pineau (former Hublot employee) replies with the following questions:  “How do you define traditional values though? Are values better by virtue of simply being older?”.

Thorsten Heitzmann continues “I see no evolution of virtues in Hublot. I see a desperate struggle for originality in the “football” theme which has nothing to do with Hublot, IMHO. I see watches to fit every taste, black, gold, colorful,..instead of an idea of what’s behind the watch. 10 years ago I could spot an Hublot from a neighboring table – today, I see just another watch.”.

Yesterday, I sat down with a couple of watch friends and the name Hublot was dropped. One of the guys said something in line with Thorsten’s comment above, “Hublot should work on their watches and movements for 10 more years and then we will – again – compare them to AP’s Royal Oak models”. A bit of a bold statement and it does not do justice to Hublot’s attempts (whether successful or not) to be a well respected brand, but my take is that it’s a common thought about Hublot. Does Hublot try too hard being an alternative for the Off-Shore with these football themes? Should they invest more money in being haute horlogerie or at least focus their advertising campaign to their horological achievements instead of being the number one choice for football of F1 fans?

On the other hand, does Hublot complain about their sales? Should they change their campaign because watch aficionados (only a small group of people) are of the opinion that there is still a huge gap between a Royal Oak Off-Shore and a Big Bang? What’s your take?

Omega Speedmaster Professional MoonPhase 3689.30.31

Aug
24

What the Speedmaster Automatic ref. ST376.0822 (also referred to as the Holy Grail Speedmaster) was for Chuck Maddox, is the Speedmaster Professional Moonphase (ref.3689.30.31) for me. This white gold Speedmaster Professional (yes, labelled ‘Professional’) was introduced during BaselWorld 1999 by Omega. In the same year I bought my first serious watch, which happened to be a Speedmaster Professional (caliber 321) as well.

The 18 carat white gold Speedmaster Professional Moonphase was only available for a limited time and commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Apollo XI landing in 1969. The caliber 1866 movement is based on Omega’s caliber 1861, which you probably recognize as being the handwound chronograph movement of the Speedmaster Professional. Caliber 1866 is based on Lemania caliber 1884, except that this one features a moonphase disc, a date and has a higher grade of finishing (as with Omega caliber 1863 used in the ‘Moonwatch’ models with display back).

Although this watch is in essence the same as the regular Moonwatch, the silvered dial and moondisc (silvered moon in relief on a metallic blue disc) makes this watch something special. The look of the 18 carat white gold case probably won’t be noticed by anyone as opposite to stainless steel, but the weight of this watch is significantly higher ofcourse. I love the feel of this white gold watch, but I would be hesitant to wear this time piece on a daily basis, since white gold is a bit more vulnerable for scratches (even though I am a desk-astronaut ).

The blued hands match nicely with the metallic blue moonphase disc. The date and moonphase can be corrected through the two pushers at approx. 10 o’clock, for which you will need a toothpick to set. The tachymeter bezel is like the regular Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (ref. 3750.50),?Ǭ made out of black aluminium ring.

This Speedy Moonphase in white gold was introduced (and delivered) with leather strap only. The single folding clasp is made out of 18 ct white gold ofcourse. As you can see above, the caseback has the same ‘The First Watch Worn On The Moon‘ inscription as the stainless steel Speedmaster Professional 3750.50. You can ask yourself if this makes any sense, since this watch is really different from the official NASA EVA watch. However, the original Moonwatch differs from the current steel version as well.

I could only find this watch in an Omega catalogue of 2000 which I had in my bookshelf. Later catalogues don’t include this watch anymore. The original list price for the ref.3689.30.31 moonphase Speedy was 9890,14 Euro. However, at the time of introduction, wholesale discount handbags, the Euro currency wasn’t ‘live’ yet, so the catalogue also prints the price tag of 21.795 Dutch Guilders. A normal stainless steel Speedmaster Pro was 3495 Dutch Guilders at that time.

So, having this watch here for a short period of time, only makes me want it more A quick scan on the internet learns me however, that this watch still doesn’t come cheap (if you can find one). I actually found a few of them for sale, and the one I noticed needs to fetch 8.450 Euro (or 11.914 USD). I think that you actually could get some discount back in 1999 when you bought this watch, so the price level didn’t change much. A solid (gold) investment so to speak.

I believe that this is one of the rarest Speedmasters ever, perhaps as rare as the Speedmaster Automatic ref. ST376.0822 (Holy Grail), Teutonic Speedmaster Moonphase (ref. 3450810) or the gold BA 145.022 Speedmaster, given to the astronauts, president, vice-president etc.

8.450 isn’t exactly change for me, so I need to look at some alternatives. Ofcourse, I know about the current Speedmaster Professional Moonphase in stainless steel and the first one in 1985 (ref. 145.0809), but these models do have the same chique appearance that the white gold 3689.30.31 has. Luckily, rolex 8570f, Omega introduced another Speedmaster Professional Moonphase in 1999 called the ‘Speedmaster Replica Moonphase’, based on the Broad Arrow 1957 replica model. On a nice leather strap, it approaches the white gold version well enough. However, the only downside is that the blue hands are not as discreet as they are on the white gold Speedy Moonphase.

Press Photo of the ref. 3575.20 by Omega

As you can see, the bracelet needs to be replaced by a leather strap However, the hour markers and hands are harder to replace. When the hour markers would be made out of white gold, it would be a lot better already. The dial looks awfully white here, but in fact it is ‘cream’ in the flesh. Omega’s catalogue photos didn’t do the watch any justice in 1999. This watch can be found in superb condition, complete with box and papers for below 3000 euro. List price was 4100 euro.

In 2001, Omega introduced even a better version though. The Speedmaster Professional Moonphase (Broad Arrow, ref. 3575.30) of 2001 is a variation of the model above, but with silvered or white gold hands, hour markers and a stainless steel bezel inlay. List price and going prices are comparable of the 3575.20 above. Both models ofcourse have the Omega caliber 1866 movement inside, with the same grade of finish.

Below, you’ll see a picture I found on the internet (somewhere) of the version I would love to own some time. And the price makes that owning this watch is more realistic than the white gold Speedmaster Professional Moonphase would be.

Fact is that I really love the metallic blued hands, baton shaped, like the original Moonwatch has. The silvered hands are nicer than the blued hands on the Broad Arrow version imho, but I wonder how readable the dial is. The bracelet needs to go ofcourse. I never understood why Omega is using these bracelets for the Speedmaster series. The vintage bracelets tapered a bit towards the clasp, which gave it a more classic look. This bracelet belongs to the Seamaster line, or other diver’s watch.

Thanks to Horloge Platform Nederland for lending me this white gold beauty! Make sure to read their review on this watch.

Virtual Reverso Museum By Jaeger-LeCoultre

Jaeger-LeCoultre will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of their Reverso model in 2011. Starting from the 10th of December, all Reverso-owners can submit their Reverso and story to the Virtual Museum of Jaeger-LeCoultre, where a museum curator will add your Reverso to one of the virtual rooms in this digital museum.

Above a picture of the new 2011 Reverso that resembles the original model from 1931, with only ‘Reverso’ on the dial and an ultra thin rectangular case. Therefor, JLC needed to use their extra thin hand wound caliber 822 for this watch. This model is only 7.2mm thick and will be available in stainless steel and pink gold. The latter one will be a limited edition, the stainless steel ‘Tribute to 1931′ Reverso will be a normal production model. More information about this Reverso can be read at my friends over at Monochrome and Hodinkee.

The exposition will be open to general public online starting from SIHH 2011.

From what I’ve seen till now, rolex yachtmaster replica, my guess is that this new Reverso will be the new ‘SIHH’-darling More information about vintage Reverso models can be found here, replica rolex watch, in an article I wrote in 2008.

DaLuca Panerai Watch Straps

Dec
02

Part of being a Paneristi is to collect nice and special watch straps. I have written about straps made from vintage ammo pouches and one – not for Panerai in this case – made from the leather interior of a Mercedes SLR 300 (1956) formerly owned by Jean Todt.

Last week, replica and watch, I received an e-mail about DaLuca’s Panerai Straps. The owner, Daniel Luczak, creates one-off straps for Panerai watches made out of ammo pouches and other vintage leather used for (mostly) military purposes. Each strap is individually named and will never be duplicated.

On PaneraiSource.com, you’ll find a well written and documented review of DaLuca straps. As I wrote some time ago, these kind of straps and intiatives makes me want to own a Panerai again. Just a basic Luminor model, or the new 1950 with in-house caliber, PAM312.

One of the vintage Panerai straps from DaLuca is called ‘Bunker Hill Revolt’! Although violent scenes from WWII movies come to mind, used rolex watch, the strap at least looks impressive and indeed made from leather that has been in or around bunkers during that time..

Below you’ll see a vintage Panerai strap called ‘flame thrower’. One can only imagine what this leather must have been going through..?Ǭ The leather goes back to the 1940s and is super soft. Dan’s straps come with a sewn-in buckle (Pre-Vendome style), includes the tubes for attaching them safely to your Panerai and free shipping within the USA (outside, add 10 USD).

Prices for the pictured straps are 290 USD (Bunker Hill Revolt) and 210 USD (Flamethrower). Payments can be made through PayPal or by Credit Card.

How to move forwards while looking backwards - Fratellowatches.com

Apr,watch online store

Olivier Muller over at The Watch Lounge did some research about innovation in the watch industry and explains how brands move forwards while looking backwards. Olivier analyzes whether some of the brands are more or less obliged to look backwards while others are benefiting from this. What to think about new brands (like Romain Jerome) that have no history at all and need other ways (e.g. innovation) to get in the spot lights? The Watch Lounge did a 4 part article about this topic and it is a must-read for everyone interested in the watch industry, watches online!

Olivier Muller also took Montblanc as an example in his essay, because the recent Minerva take-over enabled them to become a serious player in high end/haute horlogerie with their Villeret line of watches.

Make sure to read “How to move forwards while looking backwards – innovation in the watch industry” over at The Watch Lounge:

Part 1 (Hublot) Part 2 (Montblanc) Part 3 (Romain Jerome) Part 4 (Audemars Piguet)

Besides Romain Jerome, all mentioned brands in this article have a history with watches. Montblanc is discutable, but their ‘Minerva’ definitely has one. Romain Jerome has another ‘trick’ going for them, using special materials that will work on the emotion of their buyers. Titanic, Moon-Dust…

So, how about the brands who doesn’t have the ability to look back because there is nothing there? I definitely think that having a watch history or even better, in the case of Audemars Piguet, an iconic time piece is a big (very big) advantage compared to (new) brands who need to use other ways to draw people’s attention and trust. Trust? Yes. Trust. People spending serious amounts of money on watches are very hesitant to spend it on a brand that nobody knows and have no track record (yet), perhaps despite the fact that they are very innovative.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Watch 1

Jun
05

Earlier this year, during a visit to Munich, I walked into this little watch shop near the city center and I was amazed by the collection they had. Tried on an AP ROO Diver and decided that could become my next watch, or at least earned a spot in my want-list. I am talking Meertz World of Time in Munich here. A cool watch store with a lot of vintage Rolex , Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clocks and a lot of other brands.

Today, I noticed that Meertz has this cool Royal Oak Concept 1 watch by Audemars Piguet up for sale. It dates back to 2004 and was limited to 150 pieces only. Introduced in 2002 (there was a special catalogue for this model and also AP’s famous #1, #2 and #3 catalogues  mentioned this model), celebrating 30 years of Royal Oak watches, Audemars Piguet created this extreme looking time piece that was made out of an alloy called Alacrite 602 and featured a titanium bezel. The caliber 2896 manual wind movement was created by Renaud & Papi (which belongs to AP) and featured a clutch for the crown functionality, displaying whether the watch is in winding, setting or neutral mode. Something we’ve recently seen on other timepieces as well.

Furthermore, this watch features a power reserve indicator (70 hours), a tourbillon (which doesn’t make that much sense on an extreme sports watch) and a Dymograph. A what? Yes, a Dymographe. It is an instantaneous mainspring torque indicator, discount rolex watch, which means just that. You have to know that a watch with a spring (as mechanical watches tend to have) has no constant force (= torque) but diminishes as the spring unwinds. The Dymographe shows just that, the mainspring’s torque at that particular moment.

A similar Royal Oak Concept ref.25980AI has been auctioned by Antiquorum in 2007, and fetched $232,400.- USD. Today’s price of this watch at Meertz World of Time is 178.500,- Euro (approx $261,rolex gmt ii replica,300.- USD). The 150 pieces AP created were divided over 2002 (30 pieces), 2003 (60 pieces) and 2004 (60 pieces).

Linde Werdelin's White Watch

Aug
23

It seems that every major brand has a white watch in their collection, especially for the ladies who love nice watches as well. Or for the men who love to give their wife or girlfriend a nice watch. Linde Werdelin just sent out a press release introducing their White Watch, based on the famous 3-Timer model.

Although it is a women’s watch, its dimensions are 46mm (w) & 42mm (bezel diameter) by 49mm (l) by 12mm (h). According to Linde Werdelin, it wears like a 42mm watch though. As you can see, it has been given a softer and more elegant touch while a new strap has been fitted to accommodate smaller feminine wrists.

The White Watch is limited to 51 pieces worldwide and will be soon available at LindeWerdelin.com and authorised retailers and will retail at €4,discount watch,680.

IWC Flieger Chronograph DLC - Hands On With The Classic Pilot Chrono With A Twist

Oct
31

IWC Flieger Chrono ref. 3717-01

IWC Pilot Chronograph DLC

IWC Flieger Chronograph DLC

Ask any watch collector to name a few classic chronographs and no doubt that there will be a IWC Flieger Chronograph between the Speedmasters and Daytonas. It is one of the chronographs with the most readable and clean dials available out there, and it has been for years. The only thing about this watch that changed ‘recently’, is the diameter of the watch case and the color of the small seconds hand, it turned red. The diameter was 39mm and has grown to 42mm, a bit more into the ‘here and now’ of watches.

Over the last few months, I had the opportunity to try and wear an IWC Flieger Chronograph (or Pilot Chronograph as you wish) that has been treated with the ever so popular Diamond Like Carbon finish. Besides the DLC finish, they also changed the color of the small seconds hand from red into blue and a matching black strap with blue stitches. Although the responses on this particular leather strap from fellow collectors who’ve seen this watch were quite variable, I really loved it.

The sapphire crystal of the IWC has this blue glare on these pictures, but that’s because of the Anti-Reflective coating that IWC uses for (all) their crystals. With regards to the case of this watch, as you can see above, swiss replica rolex watch, the DLC finish is not too dark, just enough to make the watch a bit more hard core tool watch than it already was. The blued small second hand doesn’t add anything much, but I think I prefer it over the standard red one.

The size of 42mm sounds actually bigger than it is. I am not familiar with wearing their previous 39mm model, but this one suits me perfectly even though I am used to wearing watches smaller then this. The finish of the watch case is superb and reminds me how fond I was about my IWC Ingenieur ref.3227-1 a few years ago. IWC really does a magnificent job regarding the finish of their watch cases.

I clearly didn’t follow-up the tips Ming Thein gave in his watch photography tutorial about cleaning watches before photographing them. One thing you’ll notice on this picture and the one below, is that the DLC is quite sensitive to [greasy] finger prints and water stains. You will keep polishing the case with your cuff or shirt if you pay too much attention to them.

This is what I love about this Flieger, a clean and closed stainless steel case back. Although IWC really puts some effort in finishing their movements, I am not very interested in seeing the movement in a watch like this. It would be something different when discussing their 7-days Portguese automatic, but this movement is a work horse. IWC refers to it as their 79320-calibre, based on the famous ETA/Valjoux 7750 movement. When wearing this watch, you will immediately recognize it as a ’7750′ based watch because of the wobble. This wobble is being caused by the heavy spinning in its free direction, as the rotor of this calibre only winds when it is moving in one direction. Movements that have a rotor that winds the spring when turning into both directions, don’t have this effect. Some people like to feel their watches wobbling a bit, rolex submariner replica, others don’t.

The folding clasp has also been finished with the DLC-procedure as you can see. It is one of the nicest and most comfortable folding clasps on a leather strap I’ve experienced so far. The length of the clasp is just fine for me, shorter clasps tend to stick into the backside of my wrist. The satin brushed finish and polished edges of the clasp perfectly match the watch case.

I also would like to pay some attention to the strap on this watch. A very soft and comfortable strap, perfectly suiting the sporty characteristics of the IWC Pilot Chronograph with DLC finish. Personally, I am also very fond of IWC’s stainless steel bracelets, but I am not sure whether I would like it in ‘DLC’.

And here is the wrist shot of the Pilot’s Chronograph. As I wrote earlier, it is one of the classic chronographs and certainly one of the most legible out there. That, combined with the DLC finish makes this particular watch a very pure and functional tool watch. The IWC Pilot Chronograph ref. IW371701 retails for 4.500,- Euro and comes [standard] with an alligator strap and a classic pin buckle. The owner of this watch had it modified by a third party and added a folding clasp to it as well.
